NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Manhattan’s last-remaining Kmart has closed up shop after more than two decades, according to reports.
The store at 770 Broadway in Astor Place shuttered on Sunday after nearly 25 years in business, East Village blog EV Grieve reported. Employees only learned that the outpost would be closing on Friday, according to the blog.
The Astor Place location became Manhattan’s sole Kmart store after the chain’s outpost at Penn Plaza closed its doors last year, The Real Deal reported.
There are still two Kmart stores open in the Bronx, the outlet noted.
Kmart reportedly sold its lease for the Astor Place location to real estate investment trust Vornado Realty Trust for $46 million back in 2018.
It wasn’t immediately clear what would replace the Astor Place Kmart. 1010 WINS has reached out to Vornado Realty Trust for comment.
