NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A 43-year-old man was killed and another was injured in a hit-and-run on the Whitestone Expressway early Saturday morning when a Mercedes Benz hit the men, who had exited their vehicles following a crash, the NYPD said.

At about 6:15 a.m. police responded to a report of a collision in the northbound lanes of the Whitestone Expressway, near Linden Place.

An investigation found that a 2012 Scion iQ sedan, driven by 43-year-old David Berney, and a 2024 Toyota Rav4 SUV, driven by a 28-year-old man, were involved in a crash that left their vehicles in the center lanes.

Officials said that both drivers and the 27-year-old passenger of the Toyota exited their vehicles and were standing in the roadway, behind the Toyota, when a 2014 Mercedes Benz SUV slammed into the cars, Berney and the passenger.

Berney, of Jackson Heights, was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS, police said.

The 27-year-old was transported by private means to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital in stable condition.

The Mercedes Benz drove off and was found disabled on the Whitestone Expressway, where cops said the driver fled.

There have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
