NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A naked mother threw her two young children out of an apartment window and then jumped herself, police and neighbors said Saturday as all three remained hospitalized.

Police responded to the incident at an apartment building on Rockaway Parkway, near Winthrop Street, in Brownsville around 11 a.m.

The 24-year-old mother threw her 1-month-old daughter and then her 2-year-old son out of a second-floor window before jumping out after them, police said.

The baby girl was taken to Maimonides Medical Center in critical condition.

The boy and mother suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition, according to police.

Shandie Harrison heard the cries and went to the back of her building to find the children naked and the girl's head bleeding. She said the mother grabbed the baby and struck her head on the ground.

"When the mom pick her by the leg and start to bang her head twice on the ground, that's when we realized she's not dead," Harrison said.

Harrison's brother-in-law, Carl Chin, then stepped in.

"I leaped over the fence and grabbed her, but she sat back down on her backside with the baby in like a headlock. So I kind of forcibly took the baby from her," Chin said.

He said the only thing she said was to take care of the baby. He said she seemed to be in need of help.

"She jumped off the fire escape naked, as well. And while she was causing harm to her child, she didn't even say anything to them, she was just doing what she was doing," Chin said.

The mother, Dejhanay Jarrell, was charged with two counts each of attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment, police said.

While Harrison said she feels bad for the mother, other neighbors said the mom should have gotten help.

"She always be happy with them, walking," one woman said of the mom. "I don't know what happened. But at the same time, she don't have no right to throw them off. Them is innocent kids."
