NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — While Census Data released Thursday showed New York City surged to a record 8.8 million residents, a new report highlights how COVID-19 caused thousands to flee "The Big Apple" — with more continuing to move out this year.
WABC 7 reports 320,000 people left New York City in 2020 — a 237% increase from 2019.
Casey Madden, a former New Yorker turned Floridian, told WABC that her and her then-boyfriend's move to Tampa was only supposed to be temporary.
However, Madden said her life is now of "an entirely different person[s]."
Now engaged, with a dog named "Bleecker" and an apartment, Madden said she "went through more change in the last year" than she had in her entire life.
The outlet now reports more New Yorkers like Madden have fled the city.
Analyzing U.S. Postal Service data, WABC 7 found more than 100,000 people have filed change of address forms out of New York City in 2021 — more than double the average amount.
"We went from living vertically to horizontally," Madden added. "It's very hard to go back to that vertical way of living. I mean, we have so much more space and everything is so much cheaper."
