NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The MTA approved a fare hike Wednesday that could send subway and bus rides up to $3 starting next summer.
The hike was OK'd as part of a financial plan approved by the MTA board at its last meeting of the year--and the last before $9 congestion pricing begins on Jan. 5.
Tolls at MTA bridges and tunnels would also rise in 2025 under the plan.
The increases would take effect in August 2025.
While the exact amount fares and tolls would go up is not yet known, the MTA typically raises fares by 4% every two years, meaning subway and bus rides would likely go from the current $2.90 up to $3.
The last increase was in August 2023, when fares went from $2.75 to $2.90.
The hike was approved at the last MTA board meeting of the year--and the last one before $9 congestion pricing begins on Jan. 5.
At an unrelated press conference about subway safety with Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday, MTA CEO and Chair Janno Lieber said the fare process is ongoing and a final decision will include public engagement.
