NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – An on-duty MTA worker was attacked from behind as he investigated a stopped train at a subway station on Manhattan's East Side early Tuesday, police said.

The assault happened around 1 a.m. at the Lexington Avenue/59th Street station in Midtown.

A train stopped moving at the station, and when the 34-year-old worker entered the immobile train to see what caused the stoppage, a man attacked him, police said.

The stranger came up from behind and shoved him against a train police, according to police.

The worker suffered injuries to his shoulder and elbow, police said.

A suspect was arrested at the scene and is expected to be charged with assault, according to cops.

It wasn't immediately clear if the man is also suspected of stopping the train.
