NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Sharp-eyed firefighters in Newark evacuated a 2.5-story home after spotting its foundation had partially collapsed due to heavy rains from Tropical Storm Henri.

Twenty-three people were removed from the home at 36 Taylor street and a neighboring building around 2 a.m. Sunday, the Newark Fire Division said.

“No injuries were reported, but residents were evacuated along with neighbors from an adjacent residence at 38 Taylor Street as a precaution in advance of the upcoming storm expected to begin this afternoon,” read a news release from Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara. “A total of 16 adults and 7 children were evacuated from both residences.”

Photos shared by the Fire Division show interior and exterior damage to the home.

Even though Henri was downgraded from hurricane status, the storm has lashed the tri-state region with heavy rains and light flooding as of Sunday afternoon.

O’Hara is urging Newark drivers to avoid traveling along flooded or flood-prone roadways.
