NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The chairman of the state Democratic Committee said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shouldn’t challenge Sen. Chuck Schumer and that the congresswoman would “absolutely” lose to the longtime senator if she did.
“Chuck Schumer has been a progressive force in the state for decades,” Jay Jacobs told the New York Post. “She has a constituency that admires her and supports her, and they’re in her community, and I think it would be a loss for them if she were to do that.”
Jacobs said that if Ocasio-Cortez were to run against Schumer in the primary it would be “by ambition more than by need.”
Jacobs also said he has never met the congresswoman but that “I would look forward to doing that.”
Ocasio-Cortez, 31, hasn’t said she would challenge Schumer, 70, in 2022, but she hasn’t dispelled speculation either.
She didn’t rule out a run against Schumer when asked by Politico earlier this year, telling the outlet, “I don’t know.” She also told Vanity Fair this fall that “I don’t know if I’m really going to be staying in the House forever.”
In February, President Donald Trump predicted AOC would run against Schumer and “kick his a**.”
