NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Twenty-five New York City buildings will be illuminated in amber as part of the national Memorial to Lives Lost to COVID-19 on Tuesday evening, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
The Empire State Building, One World Trade Center and Rockefeller Center are among the buildings that will light up during the memorial, which is part of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ inauguration, de Blasio said in a press release.
Biden and Harris are set to speak at the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool during the memorial, which is expected to start at 5:30 p.m.
The mayor and his wife, First Lady Chirlane McCray, will deliver their own remarks in front of the Statue of Liberty National Memorial on Liberty Island as part of the event.
“This city, and this country, have faced down extraordinary challenges in our shared history,” de Blasio said in a statement. “And as we remember those we’ve lost to COVID-19, we must also remember that the strength and unity of our people has always helped us prevail.”
“I’m honored to stand with Lady Liberty, a beacon of hope to the nation and the world, and look forward to brighter days to come,” he added.
