NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York City has handed out approximately 10,000 masks in COVID-19 hotspots, but hasn't issued any summonses to New Yorkers who weren't wearing them, sources told 1010 WINS on Wednesday.
City officials did issue summonses to 68 businesses for COVID-19-related violations — and closed two of them — after inspecting more than 5,000, according to the sources.
On Wednesday morning, Gov. Andrew Cuomo criticized New York City and other local governments for what he described as a lack of enforcement.
New York state reported a jump in COVID-19 hospitalizations on Wednesday due in large part to "hotspot clusters" in areas including Brooklyn, Queens, Rockland County, Orange County and Broome County, he said.
"The reason we're in this situation now is because enforcement wasn't done. Let's just be clear," he said. "It's not that we didn't have the right rules."
"Now we see the infection rate go up, more people going to hospitals from these communities, so who is helped by not enforcing the rule?" he added.
1010 WINS has reached out to Mayor Bill de Blasio's office for comment on the governor's remarks.
