NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Mayor Eric Adams will be skipping Groundhog Day activities this year in order to attend the funeral for slain NYPD officer Wilbert Mora, The New York Post reported.

In a statement to the Post on Tuesday, mayoral spokesman Fabien Levy said the mayor hopes he will be able to attend Groundhog Day festivities in the years to come but this year will be spent on more serious matters.
Mora and his partner Jason Rivera were both fatally shot on Jan. 21 while responding to a domestic dispute in Harlem. While Rivera died at the scene, Mora remained on life support, eventually being taken off days later. His organs were harvested and his donation saved the lives of five people.
“As Police Commissioner [Keechant] Sewell so aptly put it, Officer Mora was three times a hero — for choosing a life of service, for sacrificing his life to protect others, and for giving life even in death through organ donation,” Levy said in the statement to the Post.
Mora’s funeral will be held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan on Wednesday morning, the same place his partner’s funeral was held on Friday where hundreds of police officers showed up to show their support.

Meanwhile, the Staten Island Zoo is scheduled to host the annual Groundhog Day Celebration on Wednesday morning. The virtual event will begin at 7:20 a.m.
