NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) — A cold front approaching New York City Thursday is expected to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms, threatening the evening commute and disrupting air travel.

Light afternoon showers are forecast to intensify into heavy rainfall around 4 p.m. New York time, bringing a risk of flash flooding, said Brian Ciemnecki, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Roughly 2 to 2.5 inches of rain are expected across New York City, he said.

More than 250 flights have been canceled between John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports as of 12 p.m. local time, with about 200 more delayed.

The Weather Prediction Center estimated that the area stretching from I-95 to the north Mid-Atlantic coast could be hit by heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms. Other than New York City, Baltimore and Philadelphia are metro areas with the greatest chance of flash flooding, the center wrote in a post on X.
