NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New York City is throwing its hat in the ring to host the next Democratic National Convention, sources told Politco.
Mayor Eric Adams is joining the bid alongside cities like Chicago and Atlanta eight years after a failed attempt by former mayor Bill De Blasio.
Applications for the national contest close May 27 for the presidential nomination convention in 2024. The winner will be announced later this year.
According to the source, New York City was one of several cities urged to bid on hosting the high-profile event with Midtown Manhattan being pitched as the location because of its accessibility to hotels, public transportation, museums and restaurants.
Political consultant Hank Sheinkopf told 1010 WINS New York has a great chance with the big reason being Adams.
"From a political standpoint, it would be very important to Democrats why they need Eric Adams... In the midterm elections, the issue will be crime," Sheinkopf said. "Eric Adams is a former police officer. He's an African American. He's a centrist. And he could be a very important figure in the long term hopes for the Democrats to get power back in this country."
In 2016, De Blasio applied to host the convention while in his first term in office. New York lost the bid to Philadelphia for many reasons such as the chosen venue being the Barclays Center in Brooklyn with its lack of hotel access and possible trouble securing the exterior. Many though Madison Square Garden in Manhattan would’ve been a better fit.
It’s been a while since New York City last hosted a presidential nominating convention. In 2004, the city held the Republican Party convention. The DNC was last in New York City 30 years ago, back in 1992, with nominee Bill Clinton.
