NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- In the wake of the recent rise in anti-Asian attacks in the city, one of the NYPD’s highest-ranking officers paid a visit to Manhattan’s Chinatown.
The NYPD’s new Chief of Department, Rodney Harrison, walked along Mott, Bayard and Elizabeth streets Friday morning speaking with residents, business leaders and local activists.
Harrison not only assured those he spoke with that the NYPD’s officers are dedicated to protecting them, but also urged them to report hate crimes, whether it be by calling 911 or contacting the department’s anonymous “Crime Stoppers" hotline.

Translators are available for those who need them, he noted.
During Harrison’s tour of the neighborhood, two sisters approached him to express concerns about the rise in anti-Asian attacks.
“We need to be protected down here. You never know,” one sister said.
“So, I have 29 years in the police department. I’ve worked in every single place within the city. I’m committed to all New Yorkers,” Harrison responded. “And I’m trying to make sure that you understand this, and I’m here to protect you.”

The new Chief of Department also said he was open to safety-centric suggestions from the community.
“If you have some type of idea, say, ‘Hey, Rod, listen, we’ve got to do this a little bit differently,’” he said. “I’m all ears.”
