NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The NYPD said Monday that a loaded AR-15 assault weapon was discovered under Lashawn McNeil's mattress, a day after he allegedly shot and killed rookie officer Jason Rivera, 22, and critically wounded his partner, Wilbert Mora, 27.
Officials said the discovery was made on Saturday during a court-authorized search of the West 135th Street apartment where McNeil, 47, was staying with his mother as she recovered from a medical procedure and allegedly got into an argument with him over dieting, which led to her 911 call.
McNeil died in Harlem Hospital on Monday after he was shot by police in an attempt to flee the apartment during the incident.
NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said the suspect used an illegal Glock 45 equipped with a "high-capacity magazine." He said the firearm was stolen Baltimore in 2017.
