NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A police officer shot and wounded a man in Brooklyn on Monday after he rushed toward several officers as they were arresting another man for gun possession, officials said.
Police officers responding to 911 calls reporting a man with a gun on Lenox Road, near Rogers Avenue, in Prospect Lefferts Gardens around 5:45 p.m. on Monday found a man holding a gun who didn’t match the description the callers reported, NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said at a news briefing.
As officers took the man into custody and recovered his gun, the man shouted, "He coming. He gonna blast me,” Monahan said.
Not long after, a second man started rushing toward the officers, he said.
Several officers told the second man to “back up and show his hands,” but the man kept rushing forward and reached into his waistband, according to Monahan.
At that point, one of the officers fired two shots, hitting the second man once in his right leg, Monahan said.
The second man, who was conscious and alert, was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition, he said. Officers who searched him did not find a gun, according to Monahan.
Police believe the two men were involved in a dispute prior to the incident, Monahan said.
The NYPD didn't immediately release the men's names or ages. An investigation is ongoing.
