NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – The NYPD has increased security and sent a team of detectives to assist in the ongoing investigation of a mass shooting that took place in Lewiston, Maine which left at least 18 people dead, officials said Thursday.
The state police in Maine issued a murder warrant for the suspect, Robert Card, who remains at large and is considered “armed and dangerous,” Maine Gov. Janet Mills announced at a press conference Thursday.
Wednesday’s shooting, which occurred at a bowling alley and restaurant, also injured 13 people in addition to those killed.
In response, the NYPD sent out an alert with the suspect’s photo to every smartphone within the department and adjusted security measures throughout the city. “We will never remain idle when there is a danger looming over us,” Police Commissioner Edward Caban said during a press conference.

To ensure the safety of New York City, the NYPD has increased security measures, especially at various entry points to the city. “We’ve also adjusted our resources to provide additional touch points and places of entry to the city,” said Rebecca Weiner, the NYPD’s deputy commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism.
“We are quite confident at this point that this horrific crime has no nexus to New York City,” Weiner added. “We can’t speculate obviously as to any motivation but we don’t see any motivation. Through extensive coordination with other agencies, NYPD has worked through the night to make sure NYC remains safe.”
Weiner further explained that the NYPD is in constant contact with law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation, sharing critical information in real-time through Operation Sentry, an NYPD program that connects hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the country.
“We coordinate extensively with local law enforcement, federal law enforcement on the ground, most up to date information and support the ongoing investigation,” Weiner said.
Mayor Eric Adams called on residents to stay alert. He emphasized, "Even though Card seems to have no ties to the New York City region, and there isn’t an immediate and concrete threat at this moment, it is still crucial for us to stay attentive.”
The mayor advised New Yorkers to proceed with their usual routines, yet to stay aware and communicate any unusual activities.
The New York Highway Patrol has also been stationed on all highways throughout the state as an additional precautionary measure. At this time, there have been no signs of the shooter in New York, and his vehicle has not been spotted within state limits.
“We urge all New Yorkers to continue to go about your business but to remain alert to your surroundings,” Weiner said. “If you see anything concerning, please don't hesitate. Please reach out.”
