NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – An NYPD sergeant has been suspended without pay after a suspect crashed a motorcycle and died while fleeing a drug bust in the Bronx on Wednesday evening, according to sources and police.

The 30-year-old suspect crashed as he fled from plainclothes narcotics officers during a "buy-and-bust" sting at West 190th Street and Aqueduct Avenue in University Heights at 5:28 p.m., sources told 1010 WINS.

According to sources, cops were trying to apprehend the suspected drug dealer when he hopped on the motorbike. The officer in question threw "an object" at the suspect in an attempt to stop him, and he lost control of the motorbike, struck a parked car and fell to the ground. The object that was thrown is a cooler, according to multiple reports.

The suspect ultimately died at the scene after the fall, the sources said. He was pronounced dead at 5:35 p.m. by EMS.

The city medical examiner is working to determine his cause of death, according to police.

The NYPD announced on social media Thursday that Sgt. Erik Duran was suspended without pay “following a fatal incident in the Bronx on Wednesday afternoon involving a man attempting to flee from the police on a motorcycle.”

“The NYPD is committed to ensuring that there will be a full, thorough, and transparent investigation of this incident to determine the facts and to take the appropriate steps forward,” the department said in the statement.

Meanwhile, New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office has launched an investigation into the incident, which is standard protocol for deaths involving police officers. The NYPD said its force investigation division is assisting.
