NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- One suspect is dead and another in NYPD custody following a shootout Friday night at a narcotics operation -- jointly conducted by the NYPD, NYS Police and DEA -- in Inwood in Upper Manhattan, officials said.

No police officers were struck by gunfire.

The trio of law enforcement agencies were conducting a "significant narcotics operation" at 8:41 p.m., at 72 Vermilyea Avenue, said NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeffrey Maddrey at a Friday night press conference.

Members of the task force tried to apprehend two men in an apartment on the first floor.

At least one of the men pulled a gun on the officers and fired at them, Maddrey said.

Officers then returned fire, and arrested one of the men.

Task force members then exited the building and requested backup. The hostage negotiating team was then called in to negotiated with the second man who had barricaded himself inside the apartment.

After the trying to contact the suspect, officer got a look inside the apartment and saw the man lying on the floor.

The Emergency Services Unit entered the apartment and were able to move the gun away from the suspect. They then realized he was dead.

Officials said it is unclear if he was fatally shot by police or he shot himself.

Two guns were found inside the apartment.

Task force members were taken to a hospital for evaluation.
