NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – The NYPD will maintain heightened security across New York City, extending these measures through the Thanksgiving Parade following escalating tensions due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, officials announced on Tuesday.
Police presence was heightened at locations such as synagogues, mosques, as well as Israeli and Palestinian government and cultural sites these past few weeks.
This increased security also extended to community events, demonstrations, and major diplomatic institutions like the U.N. and numerous consulates, given the city's significant Jewish and Muslim populations.
The NYPD also increased security for the annual Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village on Tuesday night, a precaution due to the large crowds the event attracts.
FBI Director Chris Wray spoke to senators on Tuesday, highlighting the potential for Hamas' actions to inspire extremist threats in the U.S., similar to the threats posed by ISIS in previous years.
"We assess that the actions of Hamas and its allies will serve as an inspiration, the likes of which we haven't seen since ISIS launched its so-called caliphate several years ago. In just the past few weeks, multiple foreign terrorist organizations have called for attacks against Americans and the West," Wray said.
Wary called on everyone to stay alert and aware, recognizing the essential role communities play in identifying early signs of potential violence.
"And I'd encourage you to stay vigilant, because as the first line of defense in protecting our communities, you're often the first to see the signs that someone may be mobilizing to violence. And I'd also ask you to continue sharing any intelligence or observations you may have."
