NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An off-duty NYPD officer shot and wounded a would-be robber at Penn Station on Wednesday evening, sources said.

A husband and wife, both off-duty police officers, were boarding an LIRR train at Track 18 around 7 p.m. when a 32-year-old man tried to rob the husband, according to sources.

During the scuffle, the wife pulled out her service weapon and fired a single shot, hitting the man in his shoulder on a packed platform.

The man was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue and is expected to survive.

He has five prior arrests, including an assault charge from Brooklyn just seven weeks ago, according to sources, who said he's been living in a homeless shelter in recent months.

The married officers were heading home after working near the United Nations all day during the General Assembly.
