NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man was shot and wounded by an NYPD officer after he brandished a knife and threatened store workers and cops in East Harlem on Monday morning, police said.

The 53-year-old man got into a tussle with employees at the City Fresh Market at East 120th Street and Third Avenue around 1:15 a.m.

Employees threw him out of the store and locked the doors, but he returned with a large kitchen knife and “was banging on the exterior glass of the window,” said NYPD Inspector Andrew Natiw.

“The officers gave multiple verbal commands to drop the knife and attempted to create physical distance between himself and the subject,” Natiw said, “but the subject quickly advanced towards the officers with the knife extended out.”

One officer opened fire, striking the suspect, who was wounded. He underwent surgery at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, where he was in critical but stable condition.

The officers involved were taken to a hospital for observation.

A 13-inch knife was recovered at the scene, police said.

The incident was captured on police body-cam video, and an investigation is ongoing.
