NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Customs officers discovered 29 finches hidden in hair rollers inside a man's baggage at JFK Airport over the weekend, the agency said Tuesday.
Officers found the birds while searching a 26-year-old man's baggage on Sunday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a press release.
The man had just flown into the airport from Georgetown, Guyana, and had been heading to New Jersey, the agency said.
Officers slapped the man with a $300 fine, the release said. He flew back to Guyana on Monday, the agency said.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Veterinary Services took the finches into their care after CBP seized them, the release noted.
