NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Over 30 Earth Week climate protest demonstrators were arrested outside the global headquarters of Citigroup in Tribeca on Wednesday, according to the NYPD.
Hundreds of climate activists gathered to demand the banking giant stop funding fossil fuel companies.
Activists with Extinction Rebellion NYC blockaded the entrance to the bank’s global headquarters for about two hours leading to 33 arrests, officials said.
The protest happened ahead of an April 26th shareholder meeting calling on Citi to cease its support for fossil fuel expansion, citing the International Energy Agency’s position that new fossil fuel supplies are inconsistent with taking the world net zero by 2050.
Citibank is the world’s second-largest funder of coal, oil and gas.
