NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A driver is facing multiple charges after a panhandler was fatally struck in the median of a Brooklyn street on Sunday evening, according to authorities.

According to officials, 56-year-old Walter Gonzalez was standing in the painted median near the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Schenectady Avenue in Crown Heights at about 6:30 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Gonzalez unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the roadway with severe body trauma.

EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad determined that a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling westbound on Eastern Parkway within the painted median.

After crossing Schenectady Avenue, the vehicle, driven by a 26-year-old Jefferson Springer, struck Gonzalez who was standing in the painted median, causing him to be knocked to the pavement.

Springer remained on the scene and was placed under arrest, the NYPD said.

He was charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operator of a motor vehicle, failure to obey, traffic device and an imprudent speed violation.

The a Silverado had extensive front-end damage, the Daily News reported.

An investigation remains ongoing.
