NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- The animal rights group PETA will grill a "human hot dog" at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest this Fourth of July, organizers said Friday.
With all eyes on Coney Island for the annual chowdown, PETA said it will offer up some "food for thought" for meat eaters in the form of a "grilled human on a hot dog bun."
In a news release, the group said it hopes the stunt will "serve as a reminder that cows feel pain and terror just as humans do—and that Nathan’s needs to ketchup with the times and make its gluttonous game vegan."
The competitive eating extravaganza has long drawn the ire of vegans with its glorification of all-beef wieners.
Just last year, an animal rights activist in a Darth Vader mask stormed the stage, where he was placed in a headlock by Joey Chestnut as the reigning champ ate 63 dogs and buns in 10 minutes.
PETA said it will return to Surf and Stillwell avenues with vegan franks at noon Tuesday for a "spicy spectacle" to counter the main event.
"Let’s be frank," PETA executive VP Tracy Reiman said in a statement. "Nathan’s hot dogs are bad for humans and even worse for cows, who are branded, castrated, and confined to filthy feedlots before they’re killed."
"PETA invites everyone to support liberty and justice for all this Fourth of July by tossing a delicious vegan dog on the grill instead," Reiman said.
