NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mayor Eric Adams and Planet Fitness announced a plan Thursday to give New York City high school students free access to the gym.

Students ages 14 to 19 will be able to sign up for a free Planet Fitness membership online or in person at any of the gym’s 41 locations in New York City through Aug. 31.

“We are thrilled to announce this partnership with Planet Fitness, which will allow our young New Yorkers to focus on their physical and mental health in a judgment-free space, free of charge,” said Adams.

The partnership is in line with two of Adams signature policy goals — increasing health for students and keeping young people busy in an attempt to reduce summer gun violence.

He pushed healthier school lunches and vegan days at school cafeterias, which have been criticized by students and parents for being gross.

He’s also expanded a youth summer jobs program as a key pillar of his efforts to reduce gun violence, though the program excludes undocumented people.
