NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – NYPD officers fatally shot a man who pulled a gun on them Thursday morning at a Home Depot parking lot on Staten Island, police said.
No officers were shot during the exchange of gunfire, though several were taken to a hospital for evaluation. The 55-year-old suspect was struck multiple times and rushed to Staten Island University Hospital North, where he died.
The altercation happened as officers responded to a 911 call around 5:20 a.m. about a man with a gun inside of a black Jeep Wrangler at the parking lot of the Home Depot at 2750 Veterans Rd. in Tottenville.
Arriving officers heard multiple shots being fired, and encountered the man armed with a gun, according to Assistant Chief Melissa Eger, of the NYPD's Patrol Borough Staten Island.
The officers instructed him to drop the weapon but he didn't comply and pointed the gun at the officers, Eger said.
"Five uniformed officers discharged their firearms," she said. "The male was struck numerous times."
Officers performed life-saving measure on him but he ultimately died. Police haven't identified the man but said he has an arrest history.
A Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver was recovered at the scene, along with "numerous shell casings and live ammunition," Eger said.

The NYPD's force investigation division is investigating the incident, which police said was captured on body-worn camera.
Police tape surrounded the parking lot into the morning as dozens of officers investigated.
