NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey ramped up its toll enforcement efforts in 2024, issuing over 7,000 summonses across its six bridges and tunnels, an increase from 2023, the agency announced Wednesday.
More than three-quarters of the summonses were for unclear or missing license plates, while others were issued for suspended registrations, fictitious plates, and toll evasion. Combined with speeding and other violations, the agency issued nearly 17,000 total summonses last year.
The crackdown also led to the recovery of $18 million in unpaid tolls and administrative fees, along with the impoundment of 850 vehicles due to suspended registrations.
Officers made 90 toll evasion-related arrests, including charges for theft of services and fictitious plates. An additional 106 arrests were made for outstanding warrants, stolen vehicles, and other offenses.
"This unprecedented total of more than 7,000 summonses in 2024 is due in large part to the tireless work of our law enforcement along with the advanced technologies and novel strategies we've implemented to make sure everyone is paying their fair share on our roads," said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O'Toole. "Anyone thinking about ignoring their toll bill or tacking on a fake license plate should know that our officers are ready to hold you accountable."
