POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A pup coming from a heartbreaking story is finally homeward bound to his new parents.

Local animal advocates have spent weeks looking for a forever home for 6-year-old pit bull mix Linus after his New York City owner was fatally stabbed in Fordham last year.

Linus had been looked after by the victim's elderly mother, according to the New York Post, but now needed a new home.

If no one stepped up, he may have faced being euthanized.

But those worries are gone — Linus has found a loving new home.

"We are absolutely in love," new owner Melanie Field told the New York Post. "He's sweet as can be. He sleeps with us, he snuggles — he's perfect."

Field, of Poughkeepsie, heard about Linus' story, and she and her husband got in contact with city animal group Ruthless Pawz, the Post reported.

The rest is history, and the love affair is only continuing.

"We call him Linus the Banderstatch, like the character from 'Alice in Wonderland.' It's a big headed creature everybody's afraid of — but really he's a gentle giant," said Field to the Post.
