NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Queens woman’s backyard and basement were flooded when a Long Island Rail Road retaining wall gave way during Thursday’s heavy rain.
Deirdre Agapakis, of Bayside, said that since she moved to the home several years ago she has noticed the retaining wall had some cracks in it. It finally gave way as rain hammered NYC on Thursday afternoon.
“Today, all hell broke loose, and the retention wall completely collapsed with the flooding,” she said.
Her backyard is now a “cesspool of debris and water,” and there is an inch or two of water in her basement.
“There’s no longer anything dividing the rail road and my home, like all of the rocks and debris from the rail road has now fallen into my property,” she said.
The FDNY came and shut off the electricity to her home, deeming it unsafe.
The MTA told 1010 WINS that they are looking into the issue with the retaining wall.
