NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A frantic search for a missing boy reported to be in a stolen car in Queens on Sunday night ended with the alleged car thief in custody—as well as the person who reported the child missing, as police said that person filed a false report and there was no child.

Police responded to a 911 call around 7 p.m. that a red Ford Mustang running in the driveway of a home on 202nd Street in Hollis was stolen with a 7-year-old, nonverbal boy inside.

Police launched a search for the Mustang and the missing child. Officers eventually spotted the vehicle nearby at 197th Street and Jamaica Avenue.

The alleged car thief was taken into custody, but no boy was found in the car, police said.

Police eventually determined that the person who reported the boy missing did so in the hopes of getting a faster police response to the stolen car.

The person was charged with filing a false police report, police said.
