NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A retired NYPD officer died in a Brooklyn fire on Monday, police said.
Joseph Newkirk, 76, was found in the kitchen of his second floor apartment on Union Street in Crown Heights after the fire broke out around 1:55 p.m., officials and family confirmed.
It took 60 members of the FDNY to get the flames under control, which they were able to do by 2:35 p.m., officials said.
Newkirk was dead when firefighters found him. The man’s nephew told the Daily News his uncle was “elderly and sickly.”
“He’s a veteran, a retired police officer,” said Newkirk’s nephew.
FDNY officials said the fire started on the third floor of the six-story building.
FDNY fire marshals are still looking into what caused the fire.
