George Pagan was transferred by EMS to the hospital Thursday morning, and pronounced dead at 8:33 a.m.

Pagan's cause of death is under investigation "with confirmation pending from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner," the department said in a statement.

The statement added that all deaths in custody are first investigated by the State Attorney General and the Department of Investigation.

Pagan entered DOC custody on March 9, 2022.

"Any death in custody is a tragedy and we send our deepest condolences and sympathy to this individual's friends and family," said the department's commissioner, Louis A. Molina. "We are working with our partner agencies to conduct a full investigation into the causes and circumstances."
