School bus fatally hits electric scooter rider in Queens

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A school bus hit a scooter at an intersection in Long Island City on Thursday, killing the rider, according to police.

The school bus was traveling eastbound on Queens Boulevard around 5:21 p.m. attempting to pass through a green light at the intersection of Jackson Avenue when it slammed into a Fly Wing FW7 motorized scooter driven by a 43-year-old man, officials said.

The 43-year-old scooter operator was sent flying off his ride and suffered head trauma.

EMS rushed the man to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The 54-year-old bus driver stayed at the scene of the crash and was not arrested.

No one else was injured.

Police are withholding the scooter rider’s name pending notification of his family.
