NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A son died trying to save his mother from their burning home in Queens on Monday evening, the FDNY said.

The fire broke out around 6 p.m. on 164th Street, near 109th Avenue, in South Jamaica.

The 61-year-old son had made it out to the street, but he quickly realized his 86-year-old mother was trapped in a second-floor bedroom and headed back inside without hesitation, according to witnesses.

Tragically, neither of them made it out of the home alive—they were retrieved by firefighters and pronounced dead moments later.

Roughly 25 units and 100 firefighters responded to the two-alarm blaze, where they encountered heavy fire in the basement, first floor and second floor, according to FDNY Deputy Chief George Healy.

"We very quickly located two occupants on the second floor of the house," Healy said. "They were quickly removed from the structure. We began medical intervention. Unfortunately, both of those individuals expired on scene."

Stunned neighbors identified the family as the Jacksons. They said they'd lived there for at least 50 years.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
