NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man was killed and a woman injured after the vehicle they were traveling in overturned numerous times early Monday in Harlem, officials said.
At approximately 1:40 a.m., police responded to a 911 call of an overturned vehicle at East 127 Street and 2 Avenue in Harlem, according to the NYPD.
Upon arrival, police observed an overturned vehicle and an unconscious and unresponsive man identified as 34-year-old Joseph Edlawn with trauma to the body.
EMS transported the Edlawn to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, where he was pronounced dead.
A preliminary investigation determined that Edlawn was operating a 2021 Honda Accord while traveling northbound on the Harlem River Drive at an apparent high rate of speed when he attempted to take the East 125 Street exit.
As the vehicle continued down the exit ramp at a high rate of speed it struck the curb, causing the vehicle to overturn, officials said.
The vehicle then rolled over multiple times crossing into the northbound 2 Avenue ramp to the northbound Harlem River Drive, coming to final rest on its roof, authorities said.
Police said that the driver did not have his seat belt fastened and was ejected from the vehicle through the moon roof as it overturned.
Additionally, a 28-year-old woman front passenger of the car, who has her seat belted in place, sustained only minor injuries and was transported via EMS to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem in stable condition.
The NYPD's Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating.
