NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Moretti Bakery on Staten Island wanted the community to know that its baked goods are for everyone—regardless of how they vote.
Cinzia Leon, the owner of the bakery located at 640 Forest Ave. in West Brighton, opened the business over 23 years ago with her late mother, who was part of the inspiration for the bakery’s bipartisan doughnut initiative.
“At the end of the day, she always told me when it comes to business, to keep it fair and keep it to the point that everyone has a choice,” Leon told 1010 WINS. “So, we always wanted to make sure that everyone knew that we were neutral. Sometimes you can’t put sweets with politics. It doesn’t match well, and I don’t want and I don’t want my customers feeling that I am picking a side.”

The election-themed treats feature pictures of both presidential candidates and have been on sale since Friday, to a great reception from the Staten Island community.
“On Friday alone, we sold about 400, on Saturday we sold 600, and then today was a big day as well,” Leon said. “We don’t know what tomorrow has to bring, but all my workers are coming in at 1 o’clock in the morning and they are going to start dipping.”
The white-based donuts are dipped in glaze and circled with red, white and blue sprinkles. Then, they’re topped with a picture of either Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, or former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.
Leon expects to sell at least 1,000 presidential candidate doughnuts on Tuesday.
“I’d say it’s amazing, the best doughnuts on Staten Island,” one satisfied customer told 1010 WINS.
Moretti Bakery will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Election Day.
