NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- The death of a Staten Island toddler has been ruled a homicide, police said Wednesday, two months after he reportedly overdosed on fentanyl and cocaine.

Sakani Kamagate was just 16 months old when he died at Richmond University Medical Center on the morning of Feb. 20.

Officers responding to a 911 call at 4 a.m. had found him unresponsive on a bed inside his father's home on Hamilton Avenue in St. George.

Police said at the time that he had no obvious signs of trauma.

The medical examiner determined the child had ingested a lethal amount of fentanyl and cocaine, the Daily News reported.

The boy had spent the night with his father at the home, according to the report, which said the dad found him unconscious in bed and called 911.

The father reportedly has a record that includes 28 arrests and three prison stints, including a conviction for attempted criminal sale of heroin.

Sources told the Daily News that a search of the home the night after Kamagate's death turned up heroin.

No one has been charged in the case as of Wednesday.

In an online obituary, little Sakani was remembered as a "super smart, adorable, loving, sweet baby who loved being around family."

"Although Sakani did not have much time on this earth; he touched many hearts with his bright, vibrant spirit," the post says.
