NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The suspect who allegedly attacked two people and slashed them on Christmas Eve in Grand Central Station was arraigned, prosecutors announced on Thursday.
Jason Sargeant of Brooklyn allegedly attacked two victims inside Grand Central Station with a knife on Christmas Eve and faces several charges, including assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a weapon, according to Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Anjali Puri.
One of the victims was inside the station when he heard a commotion and observed other people appearing to be afraid of a man who was yelling, who turned out to be Sargeant, according to prosecutors.
According to prosecutors, at around 10:10 p.m., Sargeant was screaming "f*** all of these people" and continued to walk towards the victim. At that time, he slashed the 42-year-old victim's left wrist. The victim suffered a deep cut to his wrist, lost a significant amount of blood, requiring a tourniquet to be applied on the scene. He was then taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he remains for treatment, having possible nerve damage to his left wrist.
Shortly after, Sargeant allegedly continued to walk through the train station and attacked a second victim, a 26-year-old woman. He allegedly first punched her in the face and then lunged at her with a knife, causing a small cut to her neck/throat area, prosecutors said.
Sargeant then fled from that area but was stopped shortly thereafter, still within Grand Central Station. A knife was recovered from Sargeant's jacket pocket by MTA Police at the time of his arrest.
Both attacks were captured on video, prosecutors said. If convicted, Sargeant faces mandatory and significant prison time.
Sargeant was held on $150,000 bail at his arraignment Wednesday night. Sargeant's next court date is Dec. 30.
Sargeant, who has been living in a shelter since at least February, started a GoFundMe campaign to secure the resources necessary to find more stable housing, according to the Daily News.
“I’ve been trying to get back on my feet but with limited job opportunities it’s been extremely exhausting,” he wrote in the description on GoFundMe. “Fortunately last week I found an opportunity that can possibly help. There is a room that I can rent but I cannot afford the first months deposit.”
