NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A man who was arrested over the weekend for allegedly stabbing an NYU student unprovoked on a Manhattan street last week had been released without bail in a July tree branch attack.

Jaime Gutierrez, 51, was arrested Friday night on charges of assault and criminal possession of a weapon in Thursday afternoon's stabbing of the NYU student in NoHo.

The victim, a 20-year-old man, was walking on Lafayette Street outside an NYU athletics building around 1:30 p.m. when Gutierrez allegedly stabbed him twice in the back with a sharp object.

The victim was hospitalized with two puncture wounds to his back. An NYU spokesperson told the Daily News that he was treated and released from a hospital.

Gutierrez, who is homeless, had been released without bail following his arrest in a July 27 attack on a 36-year-old woman, who he allegedly struck in the arm and chest with a 2-foot-long tree branch in Herald Square, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Daily News.

Gutierrez was charged with multiple crimes in that case, including assault, harassment and criminal possession of a weapon. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Gutierrez's arraignment was said to be pending Saturday in Manhattan Criminal Court.
