NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Thanksgiving manhole fire on a Brooklyn street engulfed a car parked then spread to an apartment in a building nearby, officials said.

Just after 12 p.m., firefighters responded to 76 Remsen St. in Brooklyn Heights for a manhole fire underneath a car. The fire then spread to a silver Subaru SUV.

A fire then broke out on a fourth-floor apartment inside 76 Remsen St., FDNY officials said.

There were 25 units that responded to the flames with 106 fire and EMS personnel on scene.

“The Fire Department received a phone call for a car fire in front of opposite 76 Remsen Street. When the units got to the scene, it was determined that it was actually a manhole fire underneath the car," said Deputy Chief Stephen Corcoran.

"We were in the process of suppressing the flames underneath the car and also checking the surrounding properties for carbon monoxide or any extension into the buildings. At that time, we determined that there was extension into the building, which was 76 Remsen Street, directly opposite the manhole. At that point, fire broke out on the fourth floor of that building," he added.

No injuries were reported and three buildings were evacuated.

The cause for the initial electrical fire has not been determined and an investigation is ongoing.

“The cause of the fire in the building, which we’re assuming is correlated to the electrical fire in the street, is still under investigation,” said Corcoran.
