NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A 66-year-old man was struck with a metal pipe in an unprovoked attack near Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan, police said Thursday.
The tourist was walking with family near W. 40th Street and Eighth Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when a homeless man came up and hit him on the head with the pipe, according to police.
The victim suffered a laceration and was hospitalized in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital, police said.
A suspect was arrested; the 54-year-old faces charges of felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.
The New York Post reported that the victim is a tourist from Colombia and that his daughter scared off the attacker before his arrest.
