NEW YORK -- Twitter has announced that its New York City office, located in Chelsea, has been shuttered due to the delta variant-driven spike in COVID-19 cases.

“After careful consideration of the CDC’s updated guidelines, and in light of current conditions, Twitter has made the decision to close our opened offices in New York and San Francisco as well as pause future office reopenings, effective immediately,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

The company said it will monitor local conditions and make necessary changes that “prioritize the health and safety of our Tweeps."

Much of Twitter’s workforce will be permanently allowed to work remotely, a move the company announced even as the pandemic raged.

The social media company just reopened its offices two weeks ago.

The news comes on the same day Google pushed back its return-to-work plan until at least Oct. 18 due to the spike in cases locally and nationwide. Facebook, which joined Google in announcing vaccination requirements for returning employees on Wednesday, began reopening its offices in May.
