NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – The FDNY is set to hold a wake on Monday afternoon for an EMT who died due to a heart attack while on duty in the Bronx earlier this month.
Frederick Whiteside, 43, a member of the department for 22 years, passed away due to cardiac arrest while on duty at a 911 dispatch center in the Bronx on Nov. 17.
"Our hearts are heavy over the loss of EMT Whiteside," Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said. "With more than 2 decades of service to the FDNY, he was a dedicated public servant and front-line worker. We are saddened by his sudden passing and join his family and friends in mourning his loss."
The FDNY announced that the wake will be held at McCanus Funeral Home in Brooklyn.
The wake will be conducted in two sessions, one from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and another from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., to accommodate those wishing to pay their respects.
Whiteside had been working at the dispatch center since 2019, having begun his career with the department in 2002, according to officials.
The FDNY community recently gathered for a bunting ceremony last Sunday in the Bronx, with a large number of firefighters and colleagues in a show of solidarity.
The same day, Whiteside's colleagues lined the street, paying tribute as his body was transferred to the medical examiner's office.
Following Monday's service, Whiteside will be buried at Greenwood Cemetery.
