NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Police confirmed that an 83-year-old woman was shoved to the ground on the street in an unprovoked attack Saturday morning. The assault has spurred community outrage in the Bronx.
The victim was walking on the 600 block of East 187th Street in Belmont at around 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning when she was randomly thrown to the ground by an unknown man, cops said.
1010 WINS spoke with members of the community who are enraged by the incident, and worried about their neighborhood.
“It’s terrible. It’s awful that someone just got unprovoked and attacked out of nowhere. It’s terrible,” said Valerie, who lives nearby the incident site.
Dylan, who lives around the corner with his mother and sister, is concerned about keeping them safe.
“I got to protect them too. My mom, she almost got attacked, and I wasn’t there to protect her. Some guy…started chasing her, and she started running,” Dylan shared.
The victim was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital with bruising, pain and swelling in her right hip and knee, according to officials. She has been in the hospital since, but is expected to recover.
Anna and her husband grew up in the neighborhood and they return every week to go to church. She says a lot has changed.
“This world is not that what it used to be anymore,” she told 1010 WINS.
“There used to be more cops around here than down in Manhattan,” her husband added.
The suspect fled the scene and was last seen clad in all black and wearing tan boots, the NYPD said.
There have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
