NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A woman was struck and killed by an L train at the Union Square subway station on Monday night, with witnesses describing her rushing to get back onto the platform before she was hit.

The 24-year-old victim climbed down onto the roadbed on her own accord around 10:20 p.m., police said.

As a northbound train was entering the station, she raced to get back onto the platform, but she wasn’t able to make it up in time and was struck by the train, according to police.

She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 10:30 p.m.

Police said the investigation is ongoing but that no criminality is suspected.

It’s not yet clear what prompted her to go onto the tracks.

The MTA warns riders not to go onto the tracks for any reason, including to retrieve dropped items.

The incident halted L train service in Manhattan for about 90 minutes.
