JERSEY CITY, N.J. (1010 WINS) --A man died after he was shot by a Jersey City police officer inside a home Sunday afternoon, according to the state Attorney General's Office.
At about at about 2:30 p.m., officers went to the home on Randolph Avenue in Jersey City after receiving a request by an EMS unit for assistance.
According to officials, one Jersey City officer fired his service weapon during the incident, striking the man later identified as 52-year-old Andrew Jerome Washington.
Washington was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center where he died at about 4:45 p.m.
Officials said police were attempting to deescalate the situation, when Washington, who was allegedly suffering from a mental health crisis, charged at them with a knife.
Family members told PIX11 that Washington had been treated for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder for decades.
The family told the outlet that they called the Jersey City Medical Center Crisis Center for help but police officers showed up instead.
An investigation remains ongoing.
