NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Police are ramping up shark patrols on Long Island after a man was injured from a "possible shark bite" ahead of the busy July 4 holiday weekend, officials said Friday.

The additional patrols come after the 37-year-old man suffered a laceration to his right foot while swimming off off Jones Beach in Wantagh around 1 p.m. Thursday, according to Nassau County police, who said "the nature of the injury" was "identified as a possible shark bite" by medics.
A spokesperson for Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said someone at the hospital believed the wound to be a shark bite, though that hasn't been confirmed.
Nassau police said they'll have increased patrols at all county beaches over the extended July 4 holiday weekend as a precaution.
The added patrols include marine patrols on boats, a helicopter, and also a drone
"We will have drones throughout Long Island state park beaches," George Gorman, the Long Island regional director of the New York State Office of Parks, told WABC. "When we have an issue, when we see a potential problem or report a potential problem, we will get those drones up in the air and we will survey the beaches and we will make sure everyone is safe."
The towns of Hempstead, Oyster Bay, and North Hempstead’s bay constables will work with Nassau County police officers, according to WABC.
