NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A 29-year-old mother is being charged with attempted murder for the stabbing of her 5-year-old son in Newark on Monday, authorities said.
Symona McGhee was arrested and charged on Tuesday, officials said.
She is also facing endangering the welfare of a child and possession of a weapon charges.
At approximately 5:10 p.m., police responded to a call of a 5-year-old boy stabbed on Murray Street near Brunswick Street.
Responding officers located an injured child. The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment and is reportedly in stable but critical condition.
McGhee was suffering a mental health breakdown when the child was injured, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
